Progressing within the profession.
An employee-owned review of developing technical and professional capability — used at an appropriate development point, independently of whether the employee has completed the Stage One Benchmark.
As developing professionals move beyond their first months in role, the questions shift. It is no longer only about settling in — it is about how technical knowledge is deepening, how professional judgement is forming and where each person should focus next.
The Professional Readiness Review gives the developing professional, their manager and their employer a clearer picture of that progression.
This is a Stage Two review, not a Stage One benchmark. It is designed for developing professionals who have moved beyond initial onboarding and are building genuine professional and technical capability within their discipline. It does not depend on completing Stage One.
The review examines capability as it is actually developing, within the context of the individual’s pathway and discipline.
What does the developing professional understand within their pathway or discipline? The review looks at the depth and accuracy of that knowledge as it relates to their area of practice — not simply whether they have been taught it.
Can they apply that knowledge in practice? Can they explain their reasoning, recognise professional risks and understand when to seek further advice? Application and judgement develop differently from technical knowledge — the review examines both.
What is already demonstrating strength? Where would greater depth or broader experience be valuable? Progression is individual — the review reflects where each person is, not where a generic framework says they should be.
Not just what you have been taught, but what you can actually apply, explain and build on. A clearer sense of where your capability is strong and where to focus next.
Without having to test knowledge directly, the manager gains a clearer sense of where the individual is technically, what they can apply confidently and where further experience or support would be useful.
Where technical capability is developing well, where additional experience or support would be useful, and how individuals within the same cohort or team are progressing.
The review is not a generic self-assessment. It is shaped by the individual’s specific area of practice, so that the questions, the depth expected and the output reflect what professional capability actually looks like in their discipline.
The review would examine technical areas such as measurement and documentation, cost planning and procurement, contract forms and obligations, and risk and value management — not as abstract knowledge but as applied professional capability.
Can they explain how they approach a cost plan for an unfamiliar project type? Do they understand the implications of different contract forms in the context of a specific project? Can they recognise where a commercial risk sits and how it should be managed?
The same depth and discipline-specific calibration applies across all pathways. QS/Commercial is used here as an illustration only.
The Professional Readiness Review is Stage Two of the employer journey — used at an appropriate development point as capability grows.
